This is why your quiet time isn’t working anymore (It’s Not What You Think)

May 5, 2026 by Deneen Troupe-Buitrago Leave a Comment

If your quiet time isn’t working like it used to…
it’s probably not for the reason you think.

And it doesn’t mean your faith is weak…
or that you’ve drifted.

In fact, what if the real issue is this:

It no longer fits who you are…
or the season you’re in.

And if your quiet time has started to feel… off,
like something that used to work but doesn’t anymore,
you’re not alone.

In fact… this might actually be a sign of growth.

But not in the way you’ve probably been told.

What If Your Quiet Time Isn’t the Problem?

There’s this quiet tension I hear all the time.

You still love God.
You still care deeply about your faith.
You’re still showing up.

But something feels… disconnected.

Flat.
Forced.
Maybe even a little frustrating.

And here’s what most women assume in that moment:

“I just need to be more consistent.”
“I need to be more disciplined.”
“I need to get back to what I used to do.”

But what if that’s not actually the issue?

If you’re starting to wonder whether this might be more about fit than discipline, I created something to help you explore that.

Take the Faith Shape Quiz here and begin discovering how you’re uniquely wired to connect with God.

Why This Experience Is More Common Than You Think

I remember when my quiet time started feeling exactly like this.

I was doing all the “right” things:
reading, journaling, trying to stay consistent.

But instead of feeling connected…
it started to feel like something I was trying to maintain.

And I kept thinking:

“What’s wrong with me? Why isn’t this working anymore?”

But the truth was…

nothing was wrong with my faith.

Something just wasn’t fitting anymore.

The Real Reason Your Quiet Time Feels Harder

This is where I want to gently challenge something you may have been taught:

👉 More discipline does not automatically create more depth.
👉 And consistency cannot fix misalignment.

Sometimes… the issue isn’t that you’re not doing enough.

This is something I talk about more deeply in this video/blog on why your faith can start to feel harder than it should, even when you’re doing all the “right” things.

It’s that you’re trying to grow in a way that no longer aligns with how you’re designed or the season you’re in.

And when that happens?

Even something good…
like quiet time…
can start to feel heavy.

3 Signs Your Quiet Time No Longer Fits You

Sign #1: It Feels Harder Than It Used To

Not just “I don’t feel like it sometimes”…
but consistently harder.

Like you have to push yourself just to sit down.
Like it takes more energy than it gives.

That’s not always resistance.

Sometimes… it’s a signal.

A signal that the way you’ve been approaching it…
isn’t working for you anymore.

Sign #2: You’re Doing It… But Not Connecting

You’re reading the words.
You’re going through the motions.

But it’s not landing.

You finish and think:

“I don’t even know what I just read.”
Or… “I don’t feel any different.”

I’ve been there.

And that’s one of the most confusing places to be because you’re showing up…
but you’re not experiencing connection.

Sign #3: You Keep Starting Over

This is a big one.

You try a new plan.
A new routine.
A new system.

And for a little while… it works.

Until it doesn’t.

And then you feel like you’re back at square one… again.

But what if you’re not starting over?

What if you’re actually being invited to shift?

Why One-Size-Fits-All Faith Doesn’t Work

Let me give you a picture.

Did you know… even marathoners don’t all train the same way?

Some follow high-mileage training plans.
Others use low-volume, high-intensity methods.
Some train based on time… others use run-walk strategies.

And here’s what’s interesting

They’re all training for the same race…
but using different methods based on what works best for their body…
their capacity…
and their season.

Now imagine if every runner was told:

“There’s only one way to train,
and if it’s not working for you, you just need more discipline.”

That wouldn’t make sense.

But that’s exactly what we’ve done with faith.

We’ve taken something deeply personal…
and turned it into a one-size-fits-all method.

So when it doesn’t work?

We assume the problem is us.

But what if the method isn’t wrong…

it’s just not the right fit for how you’re designed to grow?

A New Way to Think About Your Faith Rhythm

So here’s the shift I want you to see…

What if your quiet time isn’t broken…

it’s just not built for how God designed you to connect with Him?

Because the truth is:

God didn’t design you to grow in the exact same way as everyone else.

Yes, we all love Him with our heart, soul, mind, and strength…

But how that expresses itself in your life?

That can look different.

And when your faith rhythm aligns with your design…

it stops feeling like something you have to force,
and starts becoming something that actually gives life back to you.

What Changed Everything for Me

This is where everything started to change for me.

Not when I tried harder…
but when I started paying attention.

I started noticing what actually helped me slow down…
what made me feel connected instead of rushed…

     To how I naturally connected.
To what actually helped me engage.
To what felt life-giving instead of draining.

And that’s what I want for you.

Not a better system.

A better fit.

So let me ask you this:

👉 Which of these signs resonated with you the most?

Was it:

  • feeling like it’s harder than it used to be?
  • going through the motions without connection?
  • or constantly feeling like you’re starting over?

I’d love for you to share that in the comments.

And if you’re starting to realize…

“Maybe it’s not my discipline… maybe it’s the fit…”

Then I want to invite you to take the Faith Shape Quiz.

It’s designed to help you begin discovering how you’re uniquely wired to connect with God
so your faith can actually start working with you, not against you.

Because you’re not failing…
you may have just outgrown what used to work.

Be filled to overflowing,
