Why Christian ‘morning routines’ don’t work for every woman

July 21, 2026 by Deneen Troupe-Buitrago Leave a Comment

Maybe you’ve tried.

You bought the devotional.
You set your alarm for 5:00 a.m.
You put your Bible beside the coffee maker.
You promised yourself:

“This is the time it’s finally going to stick.”

Then three days later…

You hit snooze.
You overslept.
You rushed into work.
And by noon, you felt guilty.

Again.

Eventually, you start wondering:

“What’s wrong with me?”
“Why can’t I be like those women who spend an hour with God before sunrise?”
“Am I just spiritually lazy?”

I want to gently challenge something today.

Maybe the issue isn’t your love for God.

Maybe the issue is that you’ve been trying to force someone else’s rhythm.

I’m DeneenTB, a Faith & Work Alignment Strategist and creator of the Faith Design Profile Experience. I help busy Christian women build personalized faith rhythms that fit their real lives so they can feel close to God consistently instead of constantly starting over.

And one of the things I’ve discovered after years of working with women is this:

Many of us have confused spiritual principles with spiritual formulas.

Which brings us back to the idea of morning routines.

We’ve Turned a Preference Into a Spiritual Standard

Some of us have unintentionally created an equation that sounds something like this:

Early morning quiet time = spiritual maturity.

But Scripture never says that.

Jesus often withdrew to pray early in the morning. Sometimes He prayed all night. Sometimes He taught in homes. Sometimes He taught while walking. Sometimes He prayed alone, and other times He was surrounded by people.

What we see in Scripture is intentional connection with the Father.

What we don’t see is one required schedule.

The Bible gives us principles.

We often create formulas.

And formulas tend to create guilt.

Give God Your Best, Not Someone Else’s Schedule

Now, let me say something that may sound surprising coming from me.

For years, I’ve encouraged women to give their best times of the day to God.

I still believe that.

But “best” and “earliest” are not always the same thing.

For one woman, her mind is clear and attentive at 6:00 a.m.

For another, she’s exhausted in the morning because she’s been up with children or works late into the evening.

For someone else, she doesn’t fully come alive until the house becomes quiet at night.

The principle isn’t:

“God deserves your earliest hour.”

The principle is:

“God deserves your most intentional and attentive self.”

Too often we take someone else’s schedule and turn it into a spiritual standard.

Then we feel guilty when we can’t sustain it.

But perhaps the better question is:

When are you most able to be present with God?

Because a distracted 5:00 a.m. quiet time is not automatically more spiritual than an intentional conversation with God during a lunchtime walk or an evening hour of reflection and study.

God isn’t grading your faith by the clock.

He’s inviting you into relationship.

Your best time with God may be early in the morning… or it may not. The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s clock. The goal is to offer God your best attention.

The Real Question Isn’t “Are You a Morning Person?”

The real question is:

How has God designed you to naturally connect with Him?

That’s actually one of the reasons I created the Faith Design Profile Experience. I kept meeting women who loved God deeply but felt like they were failing spiritually because they couldn’t sustain someone else’s routine. Once they began understanding their natural ways of connecting with God, so much of the guilt and confusion started to make sense.

Because sometimes the problem isn’t your desire for God.

Sometimes you simply haven’t discovered your design yet.

Two women can love Jesus deeply and have completely different faith rhythms.

And neither one is wrong.

Some Women Connect Through the Heart

Heart-led women tend to experience God through meaning, relationships, compassion, and emotional connection.

For many of them, faith feels alive when there is space to reflect and process.

Forcing themselves into a rigid early-morning checklist may actually feel draining.

They may connect more deeply through:

  • Journaling
  • Reflective Bible reading
  • Worship music during a walk
  • Conversations with God throughout the day
  • Noticing God’s presence in everyday moments

Their issue often isn’t discipline.

It’s that they need space to engage personally and meaningfully.

Some Women Connect Through the Soul

Soul-led women often feel close to God through quiet, reflection, beauty, and presence.

Many of them don’t need more activity.

They need margin.

Sometimes they encounter God most deeply:

  • Sitting outside with coffee
  • Reading a Psalm in the evening
  • Taking a slow Sabbath walk
  • Spending time in silence
  • Reflecting at the end of the day

For these women, an early morning routine may work beautifully.

Or it may not.

The important thing isn’t the clock.

It’s creating room for stillness and awareness.

Some Women Connect Through the Mind

Mind-led women often connect with God through learning, understanding, and discovery.

They come alive when they’re exploring ideas and seeing connections.

For them, spiritual growth may happen through:

  • Bible studies
  • Podcasts during a commute
  • Reading theology books
  • Studying Scripture deeply
  • Asking questions and seeking understanding

Some are naturally morning learners.

Others have more mental energy in the evening.

The point is not when they study.

The point is that engaging their minds draws them closer to God.

Some Women Connect Through Strength

Strength-led women often connect with God through action, movement, and doing.

Many of them feel guilty because sitting still for an hour doesn’t work well for them.

But movement doesn’t make their faith less spiritual.

They may experience connection with God through:

  • Walking and praying
  • Serving others
  • Working with their hands
  • Worship while exercising
  • Taking action on what they’re learning

They often feel God’s presence while actively engaging life.

Again…

Nothing is wrong with them.

They’re simply responding differently to how God designed them.

As you’ve been listening, you may have found yourself thinking, “That sounds like me.”

Most women do.

But here’s the interesting part: we all have access to all four areas of faith. The question isn’t whether you have a heart, soul, mind, or strength connection with God. The question is which one tends to be your natural starting point and how the others support your growth.

That’s exactly what we explore in the Faith Design Profile Experience because understanding your design can completely change how you approach spiritual growth.

Spiritual Maturity Is Not One Routine

I think many Christian women are exhausted because they’re trying to maintain a faith routine that doesn’t fit who they are.

They’ve been copying someone else’s relationship with God.

Eventually they become discouraged.

Then they assume they lack discipline.

But imagine if we approached this differently.

Instead of asking:

“How can I make myself fit this routine?”

What if we asked:

“How might God be inviting me to meet Him in the way He uniquely designed me?”

That question changes everything.

Because spiritual maturity isn’t about becoming someone else.

It’s about faithfully responding to how God has created you.

A Word of Balance

Now, this doesn’t mean we only do what feels easy.

Every one of us needs practices that stretch us.

Every leading has areas of growth.

But stretching and forcing are not the same thing.

Growth happens when we cooperate with God’s design.

Exhaustion often happens when we ignore it.

If you’ve spent years feeling guilty because you’re not the woman who wakes up at 5:00 a.m. for a perfectly structured quiet time…

I want to give you permission to stop measuring your faith by someone else’s routine.

Your relationship with God was never supposed to be a copy.

It was meant to be personal.

Your best rhythm may depend, in part, on your primary leading and how God uniquely wired you to connect with Him.

And when you begin to understand that design, faith often feels less like pressure…

and much more like invitation.

If you’ve ever wondered why certain spiritual practices feel natural while others always seem difficult to sustain, I’d love to help you explore that.

The Faith Design Profile Experience is designed to help you discover your primary leading, understand how you’re naturally wired to connect with God, and begin creating a faith rhythm that fits your real life.

Because maybe you don’t need another morning routine.

Maybe you need a rhythm that reflects your design.

Before you go, I’d love to hear from you.

What’s one faith routine you’ve tried simply because you thought you were supposed to even though it never really fit you?

Let me know in the comments. I’d love to continue the conversation with you.

Be filled to overflowing,

DeneenTB
