How Do You Know if God Has Called You into Business?
As a Christian, discerning whether God is calling you into business can be both exhilarating and daunting. You may be grappling with questions like, “Is this really what God wants for me?” or “Am I equipped to carry out this calling?” While these questions are valid, there are often clear signs that God is leading you into business for His purposes.
Here are three powerful indicators that God is calling you into business.
1. It Will Feel Bigger Than You Can Handle (So You Will Need God)
One of the surest signs that God is calling you into business is when the vision feels overwhelming—so much bigger than what you think you can handle on your own. God’s call often stretches us beyond our comfort zones. Why? Because He wants us to rely on Him. When the task feels too great, we are forced to recognize that we can’t do it in our own strength; we need His guidance and power.
When I had finally settled on who my ideal clients were going to be for my sales business, Christian women entrepreneurs and business owners, God then opened up even more opportunities for me to serve them through a networking group, workshops, and now coaching.
I remember having this overwhelming feeling back in those early days of networking and masterminding. It was like I was standing on the edge of a cliff and a huge canyon was open in front of me. This was so scary! I was not sure what God wanted from me. But, He had everything planned and I just had to take the step.
If you find yourself in a position where the business idea in front of you feels too large, take heart! God specializes in giving His people the desires of their heart, a heart committed to Him. Just as He called Puah & Shiphrah for Moses, Huldah for revival, and Esther for her people to do seemingly impossible tasks, He is calling you to step into something that will glorify Him.
As Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
The calling to business may stretch you, but that stretching builds a deeper dependence on God, positioning you to succeed through His strength, not your own.
2. It Will Never Contradict Bible Teaching (It Will Make You Dig More Into the Word)
God will never call you to something that contradicts His Word. If the business idea aligns with biblical principles of integrity, service, and stewardship, then it’s likely part of His plan. On the contrary, if the business idea compromises your Christian values, it’s a good indication that it’s not from God.
A true calling will deepen your relationship with God by driving you into His Word. You’ll find yourself seeking wisdom from the Bible for everything, from how to lead ethically to how to treat your clients and team members. The Bible is filled with stories of men and women who worked diligently in the marketplace—Joseph as an administrator, Lydia as a businesswoman, and Priscilla & Aquila as tentmakers. They all integrated their faith into their work, and so can you.
This entrepreneurial adventure is never a straight line, right? Let’s face it, most of us take missed steps when we first get started. We just don’t know what we don’t know.
My first website was a work of art. I was so excited to have worked with a branding coach and have a product that everyone would want. Not true. Though the Personalized Faith Plan is something I believe every Christian entrepreneur ‘needs’, it is not something they even know they want.
This was the first thing that did not go as planned. Now I tell others that just because you build it, does not mean they will come. It is part of what I teach when I work with clients inside my Calling Clarity Course and Community. (AND, the PFP is also in there.)
Only when you get to know God more, build your vertical relationship with Him, will you have the stamina, the courage, and the will, to keep going when some things do not go as you planned.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Your calling into business will lead you to rely on God’s Word for clarity and guidance, showing that your work is an extension of your faith.
3. You Will Have Fears and Doubts (But You Will Also Feel Satisfaction in the Work)
Another sign that God is calling you into business is that you will experience both fear and fulfillment. It’s normal to have doubts and insecurities when stepping into something new—especially something as significant as running a business. You may wonder if you’re the right person for the job or if you’re equipped to handle the challenges ahead.
This is where I want to assure you that if God has called you into business, then you are equipped. My entire coaching business and the Calling Clarity Course is about helping women see just HOW He has equipped them to show up uniquely in their businesses.
BUT again, you just don’t know everything about all the nuances of business, from attracting clients, to forming a brand voice, to creating content that truly helps those you are called to serve.
These may be fears that are stopping you. But it’s important to remember that alongside those fears, you’ll also experience deep satisfaction and joy in doing the work. This sense of fulfillment, despite the uncertainties, is often a sign that God is moving in your life. He has placed a passion in your heart that, though frightening at times, gives you a sense of purpose and alignment with His will.
God showed me that I was in His will when I began to see my ideal client as Christian women entrepreneurs and business owners. It opened a new world for me because I LOVE how women in business think and I feel deeply connected to them! I am honored to ‘get to’ serve them each day with how God has equipped me.
Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
You will face fears, but God’s presence will bring you peace and the courage to move forward.
Where does God have you right now?
If you’re feeling the nudge that God may be calling you into business, don’t ignore it. Pay attention to these three key signs:
- an overwhelming vision that makes you realize how much you need God,
- a business that aligns with and deepens your understanding of the Bible, and
- the presence of both fears and fulfillment in your heart.
These are clear indicators that God is positioning you for something greater—something that will not only impact your life but also expand His Kingdom through your work.
Stepping into a God-centered business calling isn’t just about personal success. It’s about being a vessel for His purposes, glorifying Him through your talents and skills, and transforming the marketplace with Kingdom principles.
