“Have you ever thought, ‘I used to feel close to God… but something changed’?
Maybe you’re still doing the same things you used to — reading your Bible, going to church, praying — but now, they feel empty or even forced. That closeness you once felt seems distant, and you’re left wondering what happened.
So many women I talk with share the same struggle — and here’s the truth: what you’re feeling isn’t a sign that your faith is broken or that God has moved away. It’s often a sign that you’ve slipped out of rhythm with Him.
Because, let’s face it. . . when that rhythm is off, everything feels just a little harder, doesn’t it? That’s why today, we’re going to uncover the five signs that you may not feel close to God — signs that show up in your everyday life and in your spiritual habits. Then, I’ll introduce you to a tool I call the Faith Alignment Wheel, which explains why this happens and how you can find your way back.
Because you deserve a faith life that doesn’t just survive your busy days — it fuels them.

Why We Drift Out of Rhythm
Life doesn’t slow down, does it? The deadlines, the family responsibilities, the unexpected curveballs — they just keep coming. You wake up already behind, rushing from one thing to the next, trying to keep it all together.
And in the middle of that chaos, your faith practices — the things that used to bring you so much peace and connection — start to feel like just one more thing on the to-do list. You still love God, but reading your Bible feels mechanical. Prayers are distracted, quick, or sometimes forgotten altogether. Church feels like another obligation instead of a place of refreshment.
Then, the guilt starts to creep in.
- “Why can’t I get this right?”
- “Why does it feel like God is so far away?”
- “Maybe I’m just not trying hard enough.”
But here’s the truth: God hasn’t moved. He’s still right there, closer than your next breath. What’s changed is your rhythm — the unique way He designed you to connect with Him. Life’s transitions, stress, and shifting seasons can throw that rhythm off balance, and when that happens, your old routines stop meeting you where you are.
This is what I call spiritual dysregulation — that sense of feeling misaligned, stuck, or even spiritually exhausted. It’s not that your faith is gone or that you’ve failed; it’s simply a sign that it’s time to realign — to rediscover the way you were designed to experience God’s presence.

5 Signs You May Not Feel Close to God
These are the five signs I see most often in the women I work with — and maybe you’ll see yourself in one or two of them.
1. Spiritual Confusion
You’re trying all the things — the latest devotional, every recommended podcast, that new Bible study your friend swears by. You’re consuming so much content, but instead of clarity, you feel scattered and unsure of what’s actually helping you grow.
Example: Maybe your morning quiet time has turned into a race through three devotionals and a podcast before the kids wake up, but you finish feeling more frazzled than fed.
2. Spiritual Exhaustion
Your faith feels like hard work. You’re doing more than ever — serving at church, attending every study, volunteering, praying through lists — but instead of feeling closer to God, you feel depleted.
Example: You sign up to lead another Bible study group because “that’s what good Christians do,” but deep down you’re running on fumes and feeling resentful instead of renewed.
3. Spiritual Numbness
You’re going through the motions. You’re still showing up to church, you still pray before meals, you even read your Bible… but your heart feels distant, like you’re just checking boxes.
Example: You open your Bible app every morning out of habit, but instead of it speaking to you, the words blur together, and you close it wondering if God even hears you anymore.
4. Spiritual Overwhelm
There’s so much noise telling you what you “should” be doing to grow your faith — the perfect prayer routine, the ideal Bible plan, the latest spiritual habit tracker — that you don’t even know where to start. So you either freeze… or you try to do it all and burn out.
Example: You scroll through Instagram and see women sharing their morning routines with candle-lit Bible time and pages of colorful notes, and suddenly you feel like you’ll never measure up.
5. Spiritual Guilt or Shame
You feel like you’re failing God because you can’t keep up with what everyone else says you should be doing. Every skipped devotional or missed quiet time feels like another mark against you, and you start to believe that God is disappointed in you.
Example: You miss a week of Bible study because of work deadlines, and instead of resting in God’s grace, you find yourself avoiding prayer because you feel ashamed and unworthy.
Do any of these sound familiar? These are the signs that your rhythm has been disrupted so you may not feel close to God — and they’re also clues pointing you back to how He uniquely designed you to connect with Him.

Why These Signs Show Up — and What to Do About It
When you notice those signs — confusion, exhaustion, numbness, overwhelm, or guilt — it’s not random. This spiritual dysregulation is: when the way you’ve been practicing your faith is no longer aligned with the way God uniquely designed you to connect with Him.
God created you with a spiritual design that flows through four areas, based on Mark 12:30:
- Heart – emotional and relational connection
- Soul – creative and reflective connection
- Mind – structured and intellectual connection
- Strength – action-oriented and physical connection
When one of these areas is neglected — or when you try to grow in ways that don’t match your design — your faith wheel wobbles, and you start to feel off balance.

Here’s what that can look like in real life:
- Spiritual Confusion – Your growth feels scattered because you’re pouring energy into practices that don’t actually feed your design.
- The solution?
- Clarity. Identifying your primary area gives you a clear starting point, so you stop chasing every “should” and start focusing where God wired you to thrive.
- The solution?
- Spiritual Exhaustion – You’ve been doing more for God but feeling less connected.
- The solution?
- Alignment. Shifting your focus to practices that energize rather than drain you helps restore joy and sustainability to your faith life.
- The solution?
- Spiritual Numbness – You’re going through the motions, but your heart isn’t in it.
- The solution?
- Reconnection. When you begin to engage with God in the ways He designed you to, your faith stops feeling empty and starts feeling alive again.
- The solution?
- Spiritual Overwhelm – You’re bombarded by voices telling you what your faith “should” look like.
- The solution?
- Confidence. Knowing your unique design gives you permission to quiet the noise and walk confidently in the rhythm that’s right for you.
- The solution?
- Spiritual Guilt or Shame – You feel like you’re letting God down because you can’t keep up with what others are doing.
- The solution?
- Grace. Understanding your faith wheel helps you release the pressure to “do it all” and embrace a sustainable, grace-filled rhythm that pleases God.
- The solution?
The good news is this: when your faith wheel is balanced, everything shifts.
- Your Bible study feels personal and meaningful.
- Your prayers feel alive instead of empty.
- Your worship flows naturally throughout your day.
- And your work — the meetings, the emails, the decisions — becomes an act of worship because your faith is no longer separate from your life.
This isn’t about adding more to your plate. It’s about finding the right rhythm — one that fuels your relationship with God instead of draining it.
