Having a deep relationship with God keeps all parts of your life centered on God. A deep relationship with God holds you accountable and consistent in your calling and purpose of worshipping God in all we do: businesses, work, family, and relationships. However, some find it challenging to find the time because we are all too busy.

How to Deepen Your Relationship with God – Start with Worship that Sticks

When most people think of worship, they think of songs and singing. However, the definition is more extensive than you realize. Worship is thinking only about God because you adore, love, revere, respect, admire, and regard Him as worthy.

In her book on teaching kids about worship, Kathleen Chapman says that “practicing authentic biblical worship as God intended produces a supernatural adhesive.” In other words, worship is sticky and is also something that needs to be learned.

So, let’s learn some things about worship that will open your mind (and heart) and start the sticking process.

Worship is Not About You

First off, worship is not about you. It is not about how you feel or how you are being affected. If you hear or read this for the first time, you may be surprised. As I said, worship is all about GOD. It is about directing all your attention to Him.

Many times we ‘tell’ God we love Him. We use the word ‘I’ before we tell Him about Himself. In true worship, the focus is on Him only. Words like Glorious, Almighty, and Holy are all that need to be said.

Imagine yourself standing/kneeling before God’s throne and doing what the Angels do- “Holy, Holy, Holy.” That’s all they say. There is no thinking about themselves by saying, “We call you Holy.”

Know Him to Worship Him

The second thing is that we have to know Him to worship Him. That comes through spending time with Him in prayer and studying His Word. It all works together.

You cannot do just one part of this Christian life without doing the other parts. Imagine a circle formed in and around Prayer, Bible Study, Worship, and Service. All are parts of your whole Faith-walk. You cannot do just one or even neglect one; the others will suffer.

Focus on God in a Specific Way

To deepen your relationship with God and ultimately help your business, we need to focus on God in a specific way.

Start your day and continue your day in Worship to Him. That means praying without ceasing, which is just continually talking to God, it means taking time to study His Word each day, and it means running your business with biblical principles.

To focus everything on Him means we bring everything back to a God-focus. When God is the CEO of your life and business, it is easy to center everything around Him. Think about Him through the worship lens.

In Romans 12:1-2, Paul says to let our bodies:

…be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Ways to Worship

Now, I know how busy you are. I also know that you must fill up on God, so your day goes well. Plan your worship time with Him. Set apart a time for bible study and prayer every day as an act of obedience. Again, all parts every day, not just when you go to church for corporate worship with music.

Ways to think about God every day:

• Take a walk in nature and thank God for the day, trees, weather, and His creation.
• List three things you are grateful for in your journal, why you are grateful and thank God for those things.
• Write out your name for God: Savior, Father, LORD, King, Redeemer, etc., and draw or doodle around it. Then, write attributes of God around it: holy, almighty, glorious, love, faithful, etc.
• Listen to music and write down your thoughts about the meaning of the words.

Five Reasons to Deepen Your Relationship with God

There are definite benefits to deepening your relationship with God and, of course, also benefits for your business. Here are five reasons to deepen your relationship with God:

1. It Blesses You

Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts. Psalm 119:2

Worship brings you closer to what God has called you to do, and you understand His purpose for you. You can find the satisfaction of doing what He has called you to do through your business.

2. It Empowers You

The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. Psalm 28:7

What better way to go into your business day feeling empowered to do the things He is calling you to do. No matter what the day brings, you’re ready. When you worship, you connect to His plan for your business and get stronger.

3. It Gives You Spiritual Protection

So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s grace, not from rules about food, which don’t help those who follow them. Hebrews 13:9

Spiritual protection extends over all aspects of your life, including your business. God will help you not be distracted by what others may be doing in their businesses. Worship will always lead you into the right way to do business, which is best for you.

4. It Delivers Peace To You.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3

Daily worship keeps your heart, mind, soul, and strength on God, keeping you in perfect peace. You will have the peace to know the next step to take in your business. God’s peace will lead and guide you on the next project to work on to advance your business. Peace to know when to hire a coach to get the help you need.

5. It Ensures Purity To Your Heart

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8

Worship allows God to permeate all parts of you. It will enable Him to work on changing your mind to the way He wants you to think. It gives you a way to reframe any situation in your business to the way God thinks about that particular situation and gives you the ability to make the best choices for your business.

Are you glued to God? Do you see how worship leads to sticking with and sticking to what God wants for you? Again, remember, it is not about the music. Worship is about Him.
