Imagine stepping into a business that feels perfectly aligned with who you are—a business where every decision reflects your values, every task plays to your strengths, and every interaction feels like it was meant for you. That’s not just a dream; it’s the reality of living out your God-given calling.
Many entrepreneurs chase success by mimicking others or forcing themselves into molds that don’t fit. But what if your true path to success is already inside you, waiting to be uncovered through God’s design of you?
In the same way that every piece of a mosaic comes together to form a beautiful masterpiece, your life is made up of different aspects that God has intentionally orchestrated. Your values, personality, expertise, strengths, talents, experiences, and spiritual gifts are not random; they are purposeful elements that reveal how you are uniquely crafted for a specific role in business.
When you start to recognize these areas as pieces of God’s design for your life, everything changes—your business becomes an extension of His plan, and your work becomes an act of worship.
The Mosaic Masterpiece Model™ is a powerful tool to help you understand how these seven pieces of God’s design fit together to reveal your calling.
It’s not about trying to become someone else or striving for success by the world’s standards. Instead, it’s about uncovering the masterpiece God has already created in you and using that to make an impact in the marketplace.
When you align your business with your unique design, you experience a deeper sense of fulfillment, purpose, and success that no business strategy alone can provide.
Discovering God’s Design: The Pieces of Your Mosaic
If you have been around for a while with me, you know that I talk a lot about how every person is designed uniquely by God. When it comes to entrepreneurship, understanding that God has a specific calling for this time in your life can transform the way you approach business.
One of the ways to discover this calling is through the seven pieces of the Mosaic Masterpiece Model™: values, personality, expertise, strengths, talents, experiences, and spiritual gifts.
Ephesians 2:10 says, For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
These seven elements help you to see how God has crafted your unique design, pointing you toward a specific business calling. By knowing yourself better, you can better utilize this equipping and shine in new ways. You can create a business that is your Mosaic Masterpiece, your unique gift to the world.
Here’s how each of the seven pieces plays a vital role in determining God’s design of you for your calling into business:
1. Values: The Foundation of Your Decision-Making
Your values give your business its unique quality and helps you build a reputation.
They are the guiding principles that define what’s most important to you. In business, they influence every decision you make, from the clients you choose to serve to how you handle conflict.
Your God-given values provide the moral and ethical framework for your business. When you align your business with your core values, you’re better equipped to create a business that glorifies God’s design and honors the principles He has instilled in you.
Values also determine your priorities. That means when you are behaving in a way that matches your values, you feel satisfied and content. But when what you are doing does not align with your values, it feels ‘wrong’.
Have you ever had a feeling of dread come over you when you are going to ‘that’ meeting or have to work on ‘that’ project? That’s a good indication you are not working in your values.
A good way to begin to define your values is to look back on your life to identify when you felt really good and really confident that you were making good choices.
Think through times in both your personal life and in your business. Think about when you were the happiest, doing something that made you the most proud, and involved in activities that felt fulfilling and satisfying.
Use your values as a filter for every decision you make in your business.
2. Personality: Understanding How God Wired You
Your personality gives character to your business.
It is a reflection of how God’s design has wired you to interact with the world. Whether you are naturally introverted or extroverted, detail-oriented or big-picture focused, these traits impact the way you lead, manage, and create.
It is not only what you do but HOW you do it.
Each of us leads life and makes decisions, in different ways. Which one do you think best describes you?
- Leading and making decisions with your Heart, your feelings and emotions.
- Leading and making decisions with your Soul, your creativity and intuition.
- Leading and making decisions with your Mind, your logic and intellect.
- Or, leading with your Strength, your experiences and actions.
Let me know in the comments how your think you lead and make decisions, with your Heart, Soul, Mind, or Strength.
God also uses your personality to help you connect with the right people (ideal clients) and build relationships that further His kingdom through your business. The focus should never remain internal, it should always help you to push externally so you can serve others and serve Him through your business.
By embracing the personality traits God gave you, you can more confidently navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship while remaining true to who you are and how God wired you, you create a business that has your unique signature on it. It becomes a business that you are excited about doing because it is just so you!
3. Expertise: Leveraging Your Knowledge for God’s Glory
Your expertise gives you the qualifications for your business.
It comes from the knowledge and skills you’ve gained through education, training, and professional development. God has allowed you to accumulate this expertise to serve others in specific ways.
Whether you are a master of technology, an expert in marketing, or skilled in finance, your expertise is a tool God can use to bless your clients and provide solutions in the marketplace.
However, there is a trap where many get caught. They believe if there is no formal training you can’t call it an expertise. Or, that using a degree in a totally new way is not valid.
This was true for me when I started to call myself a coach. I became a coach without having the credentials. I had been a teacher and had the expertise in that but not exactly in what some might call traditional coaching.
However, I had the expertise because I pursued excellence in learning how I could help others better. It interested me and I learned on my own. It is something that came natural to me and I loved doing it.
That’s what you need to call yourself the ‘expert’. Don’t worry about the proverbial 10,000 hours, you just need to be a little ahead of those you are serving. God’s design has equipped you to do what He has called you to do.
Now, you may want to study in a traditional setting, and your calling might include that. But, don’t limit yourself if you feel God tugging at your heart. Explore it fully and give yourself a thorough evaluation of your skills.
When you recognize your expertise as a gift from God, you begin to see how it can be used to fulfill a larger, more godly purpose.
4. Strengths: Maximizing What You Do Best
Your strengths give you the characteristics of your business. How you lead your sphere of influence, your following, and your clients.
Everyone has natural strengths—things they are inherently good at. These strengths, when embraced, allow you to operate at your highest capacity. God has given you specific strengths not only to excel but also to make a difference in the lives of others.
God calls you to be authentically you. Strengths are a part of that authenticity because they are really those talents that you have developed and performed consistently so you are really good at them.
You may have been told that you should be working on those things that are your weaknesses. That’s why we get tutors in school, right? But imagine focusing on your strengths and getting better at those. Then you really show up differently in your industry.
When you focus on your strengths in business, you operate in alignment with God’s design of you, enabling you to perform your work with greater ease and effectiveness. This contributes to the unique value you bring to the marketplace.
The place where I see strengths really showing up in my own business is knowing the way I want to lead my business and what type of business model I really want to pursue. It’s really about choosing how I want to serve my clients.
The beauty of understanding Strengths is that you can see the value in each person, each client. You are able to show up at your best to serve those in your sphere of influence.
What are some things you really enjoy doing and are really good at doing at the same time? That’s a strength. Let me know in the comments what came to mind.
5. Talents: A Reflection of God’s Creativity
Talents are where you show your quirkiness and uniqueness in your business.
Your talents are the raw, natural abilities that God has placed within you. Talents often show up early in life and can be developed over time.
Where Strengths ARE those talents you have perfected, using your talents in your business really helps to set you apart.
Do you do know you have natural talents and abilities that no one else has? These are the things that come easy to you that are not easy for others. Those ‘gifts’ from God are ways you can show up in your business uniquely.
Whether it’s a talent for writing, speaking, or innovation, these talents are a reflection of God’s design in you.
By identifying and refining your talents, you can use them in business to glorify God and serve others in ways that no one else can. Talents, when combined with expertise and strengths, can help you stand out in your business, even in a saturated industry, by creating a unique offering that only you can provide.
For me this is my ability to organize. To take a vision or idea and then break it down into an actionable plan that creates a step-by-step process. I use this in Calling Clarity with the Mosaic Masterpiece Model™ to help women, you, get on track with their goals, break down the steps, and keep them accountable as they move though the process.
Why is it so important to figure out how your own talents fit into your business? Because, the quirkiest, most unique things about yourself are the very things you need to let others know. No one else has the unique combination of skills that you have to help those God has called you to serve.
6. Experiences: The Roadmap to Your Calling
Experiences give you courage in your business. The courage to take the next step and to keep going.
Your life experiences—both good and bad—have shaped who you are today. God uses your past experiences to prepare you for your future calling.
God has you go through things so you learn more about Him and so you can speak truth into others. Those difficult experiences are vital for you to be refined so you reflect Christ in your life.
Those good things in your life are just as important to give you a way of approaching your business in a way that is authentic to you.
Every challenge, success, setback, and triumph has equipped you with valuable lessons that can be applied in your business. Your experiences give you insight and empathy, enabling you to connect with clients and partners on a deeper level. By recognizing how God has used your past to shape your present, you can better discern how He is calling you to impact those He is calling you to serve.
The worse experience in my life has become the catalyst for everything I am doing now. AND, a load of other experiences (e.g., drama, mission work, homeschooling, etc.) fill in the unique parts of what I offer through my business.
Your experiences have been given to you so you can fulfill God’s design for you through your business. He has your ideal clients already chosen for you AND because of your experience, you are the perfect person to help them.
Remember, God promises in Romans 8:28 . . . that He causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to his purpose for them.
7. Spiritual Gifts: Empowered by the Holy Spirit
Your spiritual gifts are the confirmation of your business, knowing that you are serving God through your business by using your gifts.
Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit to enable you to serve others and advance God’s kingdom.
Spiritual Gifts are given when we need them. At times they are related to natural talents and abilities, BUT they are also spirit-infused, and they rise up when we need them most.
They are meant to edify the group, the church, the people we are around, and those in your business, that means your clients.
Whether it’s the gift of leadership, discernment, or encouragement, your spiritual gifts are meant to be used in your business to build up and inspire those around you. When you operate in your spiritual gifts, you are empowered by God to accomplish more than you could on your own.
Recognizing these Gifts can be a challenge; allowing God to use them is your choice. While leading a bible/book study on spiritual gifts with my networking group, we took an assessment and discovered many new things.
One woman had the Pastoring gift. She laughed when this result came to light. At first, she felt that she could not possibly have a gift she thought was reserved for Pastors.
But the definition for Pastoring is caring consistently for the personal needs of others through personalized counseling and coaching.
While she is not a coach, she is a listener. God has given her many opportunities to pour into others’ lives. She is a magnet for those hurting and in need of comfort (and many times they become her customers).
Your GIFTS are for you to share. Choosing to serve God and others through your Spiritual Gifts brings an awareness of God to the world. You SHINE for Him.
No matter your gift, whether it feels ‘spiritual’ or not, can be used by God in your business. I think of my own gift of Administration. I create order out of chaos. I am able to organize ideas, resources, time, and people to make things productive and achieve goals.
I do this with my clients in Calling Clarity. I see it come through in many ways, from creating the program to starting and ending our meetings on time. It confirms to me that I am using my gifts wisely.
