How to Build a Faith Plan

July 1, 2025 by Deneen Troupe-Buitrago Leave a Comment

Are you overwhelmed by trying to juggle your faith and your busy life? Does it feel like you’re constantly falling short, no matter how hard you try to build lasting spiritual habits? You’re not alone.

But what if you could create a faith plan that actually fits your life—without the overwhelm?

Building a faith plan that sticks can feel like an overwhelming task, especially when you’re balancing the demands of work, family, and everything in between. But it doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful.

I’m going to walk you through four key steps that will help you create a sustainable, practical faith plan that fits seamlessly into your life. These steps will help you:

  1. Gain Clarity about your unique spiritual design and what truly fuels your faith growth.
  2. Break It Down into small, manageable actions that work with your busy schedule.
  3. Align Your Plan with your lifestyle, ensuring it doesn’t add more stress but enhances your day-to-day routine.
  4. Focus on Sustainable Growth, so you can stay on track without burning out.

So, let’s dive into each one of these steps and by the end of this, you’ll have a clear path forward, and you’ll feel empowered to take consistent action towards a faith plan that actually sticks.

1. You Start with Clarity

Think about how you approach a big project at work. Would you dive in without a plan? Probably not! The same goes for your faith journey. The first step is to understand your unique spiritual design—how God has wired you to connect with Him. Once you have clarity on that, your faith plan becomes much easier to create and stick with.

You may have already felt that pull towards certain ways of connecting with God. Maybe you feel closest to Him through deep, emotional prayer and worship, or perhaps you thrive when you reflect on His purpose for your life in quiet, meditative moments. You might engage intellectually by diving into Scripture or studying theology, or you may find that living out your faith through action and service fuels your growth.

Here’s the cool part: when you know which part of the HSMS (Heart, Soul, Mind, Strength) Model™ you resonate with, you can build a plan that truly reflects how God has designed you. It doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s—it just needs to feel authentic to you.

Not sure where to start? Take the Faith Shape Quiz to discover which part of the model you lead with. It’ll give you a clearer picture of how to align your faith growth with the way God has wired you.

Faith Rhythm

Here’s how you can begin building a faith rhythm that aligns with who you are:

  • Heart-Led: Dedicate 5-10 minutes each morning to reflect on a Bible verse, journaling your thoughts and feelings. This will help you start your day focused on God and His Word.
  • Mind-Led: Set aside time each week to dive into a Bible commentary or listen to a podcast that deepens your understanding of Scripture. This will satisfy your intellectual curiosity and help you grow in your knowledge of God.
  • Strength-Led: Find ways to live out your faith through action. Set aside time once a week to serve others, whether that’s volunteering at a local charity or serving in your church. You can also make your daily work an offering to God by praying before you start and asking Him to guide your efforts.
  • Soul-Led: Spend 15-20 minutes each day in quiet reflection or journaling. Take time to meditate on a verse or go for a walk in nature, reflecting on God’s purpose for you. This time of peace and reflection will nourish your soul and deepen your connection with Him.

These small, intentional steps will help you create a faith plan that’s both manageable and deeply personal.

2. Break It Down Into Manageable Steps

We’ve all been there—you set a big goal, get excited, and then quickly feel overwhelmed when it seems like too much to tackle. Instead of diving headfirst into a massive project, try breaking it down into small, bite-sized actions that feel doable. Focus on one habit at a time and remember to give yourself grace when things don’t go exactly as planned. It’s all about progress, not perfection!

Here’s how to make it work for you:

  • Start Small: Don’t pressure yourself to do everything at once. Begin with just 5 minutes of prayer or meditation each day. That small moment can make a big impact over time.
  • Track Progress: Keep it simple—create a checklist or journal to track your daily spiritual milestones. It’ll give you a visual reminder of how far you’ve come and motivate you to keep going.
  • Consistency Over Perfection: Instead of trying to stick to a rigid schedule, aim for consistency. Little steps, taken regularly, will help you build a steady rhythm that feels more natural and sustainable.

Here’s how to get started:

If you’ve been wanting to study the Bible every day but feel too busy, start with 5 minutes each morning before work. That’s it—just five minutes. Over time, as you get into the groove, you might find that you want to spend more time diving into Scripture because you’ve built a rhythm that fits your life.

It’s all about creating a routine that feels right for you—one that builds momentum without feeling like a burden.

3. Align Your Faith Plan with Your Lifestyle

As a busy professional, entrepreneur, and/or mom, your plate is already full. You might feel like there’s no room for one more thing, especially when it comes to your faith. But here’s the good news: integrating your faith into your daily routine doesn’t have to take hours or feel like one more thing to manage. It’s about weaving moments of connection with God into your already busy lifestyle.

Here’s how you can make it work:

  • Morning Routine: Instead of rushing through your morning, take a few moments to align your thoughts with God. Whether it’s enjoying your morning coffee while reflecting on a verse or using those first few minutes to pray, it doesn’t have to be long to set the tone for the day.
  • Workday Faith Moments: As a business owner or professional, you’re likely moving from one task to the next all day long. But you can still find moments to connect with God. Whether it’s a quick prayer before a meeting, a moment of reflection during lunch, or reading a scripture during your break, these small pauses will keep you centered.
  • Evening Reflection: At the end of the day, take a moment to journal about what you’re thankful for or reflect on how God’s been present with you throughout the day. It doesn’t need to be lengthy—just a few moments before bed to realign your heart and spirit.

Here’s an idea to get you started:

As a business owner, you might find yourself constantly making decisions. Before you walk into a meeting, simply ask God for wisdom, trusting Him to guide you. Or, if you’re commuting to work, listen to a podcast that speaks to both your business goals and your faith growth. These small actions can make a big impact on how you feel connected to God, even in the middle of your busy day.

It’s all about finding ways to fit faith into the nooks and crannies of your day, so it becomes a natural part of your rhythm rather than a burden.

4. Focus on Sustainable Growth

It’s so easy to dive into a new faith routine with tons of enthusiasm, only to feel like you’ve hit a wall a few weeks later. We’ve all been there, right? Instead of burning out, the key to lasting spiritual growth is to create rhythms that allow for rest, reflection, and realignment. You don’t have to be “on” all the time; in fact, those moments of pause can be where the most growth happens.

Here’s how to keep your faith journey sustainable:

  • Daily Rhythm: Start by committing to small, consistent moments. Just 8 minutes of prayer or reflection each day can make a difference. Also, set aside 8 hours each month for a mini Sabbath, and every few months, try to take 8 days for a spiritual retreat or reset. These breaks will give you the space to recalibrate and keep moving forward. (Here’s a video that explains this in detail.)
  • Accountability: Sometimes, we all need a little encouragement. Whether it’s a close friend, a small group, or a faith community, having someone to share your journey with can make all the difference. Accountability keeps you focused and motivated, especially on the harder days.
  • Be Gentle with Yourself: Remember, your faith journey isn’t a race. It’s okay if some days feel harder than others. Growth happens over time, and it’s about consistency, not perfection.

Here’s something else for you:

If you’re feeling spiritually dry, a mini retreat (even just an afternoon) can do wonders. Take some time away—whether it’s a quiet afternoon in nature or a day of reflection at home—to reconnect with God. Plan a few of these throughout the year to reflect on where you’ve been, where you’re going, and what God is calling you to next.

By giving yourself permission to rest and recalibrate, you’ll set yourself up for sustainable growth that lasts.
