How is your prayer life? Do you take time each day to talk to God? I have a hard time because my mind goes in many directions and I get distracted easily. You may be like that too. Or, maybe you feel there must be a set apart time for you to be alone in order to pray. Maybe you feel that you can only pray, really pray, when you can actually get on your knees.
And, even if you do find time to pray, it seems your prayers aren’t going anywhere. You have a long list of needs and petitions. But, you really don’t know HOW to listen to God. You do want to be better connected to God through prayer but the way you were taught is not working for how you’re actually wired. God created you unique; what fits for one or for some, may not fit for another, for you. But, you do know that prayer is important.
Jonathan Edwards said this about prayer over 200 years ago, “Prayer is one of the greatest and most excellent means of nourishing the new nature, and of causing the soul to flourish and prosper.” This message was for then as well as for now AND, it is true that prayer has amazing benefits to nourish us. Prayer is right up there with eating well, exercising and losing weight as a factor in a longer life. You can look up the studies that prove it. Not only physical well being but emotional health as well. And, daily genuine prayer makes us know ourselves better, be more humble, grow our confidence, and improve our capacity to love. Can you stay mad at someone for whom you are praying? Also, prayer makes us less worried because we know things will work out for our best and it makes us actively more understanding of others. Whew! We need to pray. . .
So, what is real genuine prayer anyway? It is communication with our heavenly Father. It can be done alone or with a group of people. It can be spoken or even sung out loud but then again, it may just be a thought inside your head. Sometimes it can take on a more meditative form where words aren’t really necessary at all. But having a prayer life is important, not just for its healing benefits but also for that closer connection to God. That’s why you need to find a way, your best way to make prayer work in your own life. There is no getting around the fact that God calls each of us to pray. We need that time with Him and we need it to be a direct link to His power in our lives. By assessing you, I can determine those methods that will speak to your heart as you learn more about God’s heart.
Let’s look at where you may be right now on the prayer continuum. Now remember, these are just points you may fall somewhere in between. What is the closest point that you can say is true about you? I take everything to God in prayer throughout my day; it is the way I breathe. . . I have time set aside for prayer everyday but it is not the experience I would like it to be. . . I try to pray every day but I don’t always have the time or am able to fit it into my schedule. . . I pray at church and when things are going really bad. . . I guess I don’t really pray.
Let’s try an exercise. The Lord’s Prayer begins- Our Father in heaven, hollowed be your name. This is where all prayer should start, with worship. So, take a few minutes to write down 10 words or short phrases that end this phrase: God, You are . . . . I’m going to give you a minute. Go ahead and write them down. God, You are. . .
Do you have few written? God, you are Holy. God, you are Love. God, you are my friend. God, you are Wonderful. God, you are my Father. God, you are Worthy. God, you are Compassionate. God, you are Faithful. God, you are my Healer. God, you are Wise.
You may not have thought of these but your list may look similar. Worship is defined as “God’s Worth”. It is one-directional and focuses on Him alone. Writing is a great way to pray. We can write letters to God or journal as a way to focus on prayer. One thing I have found is that after you’ve begun to pray on a daily basis, you suddenly begin to see God and His miracles everywhere!

I know how busy you are. I know that you want to make the most of each moment in your day. So, Wise Woman, you plan. And, Wise Woman, you also know that your day goes much better when you incorporate God and talk to Him. And you, Wise Woman, want to overflow into all the other parts of your life in a way that is good and serves others. Only by connecting to God, to His super-abundance, in a way that speaks to your heart, that helps you listen to Him, will you satisfy that yearning to know Him better.
Romans 12:1-2 (NLT) says, And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Prayer can do that. It is important. I know you want to have the kind of prayer life that connects you to God at any given moment AND it is a real connection that you can feel. I know you struggle with finding a way that works in your life, with the way you are wired, and with what you have been taught. Don’t give up. God has a beautiful plan laid out for you. Through prayer He will reveal it to you, I know it.
