4 Signs You Might Be Living with Little Faith

October 21, 2025 by Deneen Troupe-Buitrago Leave a Comment

Have you ever sat in church, read your Bible, or prayed—and still walked away wondering, “Why doesn’t my faith feel stronger by now?”

You believe in God. You love Him. You want to trust Him fully. Yet when life gets overwhelming, you find yourself:

  • Worrying about what might happen tomorrow.
  • Doubting whether God will come through for you.
  • Fearing the worst-case scenario in every storm.
  • Neglecting the very habits that used to make your faith feel alive.

If that feels uncomfortably familiar, you’re not alone. Jesus often looked at His own disciples—the ones who had front-row seats to miracles—and gently said, “You of little faith.”

That means little faith isn’t a sign of failure. It’s simply a sign that God wants to grow you.

And here’s the hope: you don’t have to stay stuck in little faith. You can move forward into a rhythm of faith that feels confident, steady, and deeply personal—because God designed you to grow.

We’re going to unpack what it really means to live with little faith.

You’ll discover:

  1. The 4 common signs of little faith—worry, doubt, exaggerated peril, and neglect of spiritual disciplines—and how they might be showing up in your own life.
  2. Where you might be on the journey of faith by recognizing the stages where many Christians pause, struggle, or get stuck—and how God invites you to keep moving toward deeper surrender.
  3. The way forward, including how God has already given you a unique design for growth—and how the Personalized Faith Plan (PFP) can help you move from little faith into great faith with rhythms that actually fit your real life.

Keep reading, by the end you’ll not only recognize the patterns that keep you from growing, but you’ll also see the hopeful path God has laid out for you—one that leads to deeper trust, confidence, and joy in Him.

4 Signs You Might Be Living with Little Faith

1. Worry Becomes Your Default

When your mind constantly circles around the “what ifs” instead of resting in God’s promises, worry becomes the driver of your decisions. Little faith magnifies problems, while growing faith brings them to God in trust.

Example: Imagine a businesswoman staring at her monthly numbers, panicking over whether she’ll make payroll. Instead of remembering how God has provided before, she loses sleep replaying every possible disaster scenario.

Jesus addressed this kind of worry directly in Matthew 6:30, reminding His followers that if God clothes the lilies of the field, He will certainly care for them too.

2. Doubt Shadows Your Decisions

You believe God is powerful, but you secretly wonder if He’ll come through for you. Doubt leaves you hesitant—your prayers sound more like “just in case” requests than bold declarations of trust.

Example: Think of Peter stepping out of the boat in Matthew 14:31. For a moment, his faith was strong enough to walk on water. But as soon as doubt crept in, he began to sink.

In our lives, this might look like hesitating to apply for a position you feel called to, or delaying a bold step of obedience, because you’re not sure God will really show up.

3. Exaggerated Peril Shapes Your Perspective

Little faith makes the storm look bigger than the Savior. You overestimate the danger and underestimate God’s presence and power. Fear takes up more mental space than hope.

Example: The disciples experienced this in Matthew 8:26 when a storm rocked their boat. Even with Jesus right there with them, they panicked, shouting, “Lord, save us!” In the same way, we can look at circumstances—like a diagnosis, a failing project, or a broken relationship—and let fear convince us it’s bigger than God’s ability to rescue.

4. Neglect of Disciplines Weakens Your Roots

Faith is like a muscle—it grows when exercised. When practices like prayer, Scripture reading, worship, or service slip off your radar, your connection with God weakens. Little faith doesn’t get nourished, and over time it withers.

Example: Think of a plant that hasn’t been watered. At first, it looks fine. But gradually the leaves curl and the color fades.

Neglecting your faith rhythms has the same effect. Maybe you once loved spending time in the Word, but now your Bible sits unopened for weeks. Without steady nourishment, your roots can’t go deep enough to sustain you when challenges come.

Where These Signs Show Up on Your Faith Journey

Every believer is on a journey with God. Along the way, there are seasons where faith feels alive and growing—and others where it can feel stalled or stuck. The four signs of little faith often reveal where you are on that journey.

  • Stage 1: Disillusioned Disciple
You’re still showing up—maybe at church, Bible study, or in prayer—but inside, you’re wrestling with doubt and distance. This is where the sign of doubt shadowing your decisions becomes clear. You believe in God, but you wonder if He really sees you or will act on your behalf.
  • Stage 2: Distracted Wanderer
Worry and busyness start to take over. You’re running on empty, pulled in a thousand directions, and your spiritual practices slip away. This is where worry becoming your default and neglect of disciplines show up. You’re trying to juggle it all, but without consistent rhythms, your faith feels fragile and easily shaken.
  • Stage 3: Fully Surrendered Follower
This is where God longs to take you. Instead of letting exaggerated peril shape your perspective, you begin to see storms as opportunities to trust Him more deeply. Instead of letting doubt or worry drive you, you lean into rhythms that root you in His presence. Here, faith feels alive, confident, and steady—even in hard seasons—because your trust is anchored in God, not in circumstances.

When little faith keeps you stuck between disillusionment and distraction, it can feel like you’re spinning your wheels spiritually. But God’s invitation is always to move forward—to grow into a fully surrendered faith where your trust deepens, your rhythms strengthen, and your life begins to flourish.

The Way Forward: From Little Faith to Growing Faith

If you’ve recognized yourself in any of these signs, take heart—God never intended for you to stay stuck in little faith. His desire is to grow you into a faith that is alive, steady, and deeply rooted in Him.

The truth is, you don’t need to “try harder,” attend more events, or pile on another spiritual checklist. That’s what often leads to guilt and overwhelm in the first place. What you do need is a rhythm with God that feels natural, sustainable, and personal to how He created you.

Think of it this way:

  • A heart-led woman connects deeply through worship, relationships, and prayer that stirs her emotions.
  • A soul-led woman thrives on reflection, journaling, and seeing God’s hand in everyday moments.
  • A mind-led woman comes alive in structured study, truth-seeking, and applying Scripture to real-life decisions.
  • A strength-led woman experiences God most in action—serving, creating, and physically expressing her faith.

When you begin to uncover your Faith Shape™ (Heart, Soul, Mind, Strength) and live into it, faith no longer feels forced.

Instead of:

  • Worry running your thoughts, you develop a steady trust in God’s provision.
Instead of spiraling when the bills are due, you pause to remember how God has provided in the past. You might even write a gratitude list of answered prayers to anchor yourself in His faithfulness.
  • Doubt clouding your decisions, you gain confidence in His presence and promises.
When faced with a career change, instead of second-guessing every option, you bring it before God in prayer and Scripture. You step forward with peace, knowing He will redirect you if needed, rather than being paralyzed by “what ifs.”
  • Fear magnifying the storms, you learn to rest in His power.
When the diagnosis, deadline, or conflict feels overwhelming, you intentionally declare God’s Word over the situation—like Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” You begin to shift from panic to peace, not because the storm disappears, but because you’re resting in His strength.
  • Neglect drying up your roots, you establish rhythms that continually nourish your faith.
Instead of letting weeks slip by without prayer or time in the Word, you build a simple, life-giving rhythm. Maybe it’s praying during your commute, journaling three nights a week, or listening to worship while walking. These practices become natural ways of staying rooted, not heavy obligations.

That’s what the Personalized Faith Plan (PFP) is designed to do—help you identify your unique God-given design and create rhythms of prayer, Scripture, worship, and service that fit your real life.

When you align with how God has wired you, faith stops feeling fragile and starts feeling freeing. It becomes less about “keeping up” and more about staying connected. That’s the path from little faith to great faith.

And when faith feels freeing, you’re finally able to live the life God designed—with confidence, clarity, and joy.

Invitation to Grow

If you’ve seen yourself in any of these signs of little faith, don’t let discouragement take over. Little faith isn’t a dead end—it’s a starting point. It’s God’s gentle way of showing you He has more for you: more trust, more confidence, more peace, and more strength.

You don’t have to keep cycling through worry, doubt, fear, or neglect. God has already designed a way for you to grow, and when you step into rhythms that actually fit your life, your faith begins to flourish.
